In the Memoirs of Abbé Morellet, a microcosm lives again which, in Paris, brings together philosophers, people of the world and people "in place". A few dozen salons, a few cafes, two or three theatres, the Tuileries and the Opera: that's the universe. Morellet tells the story of an existence intimately involved in the literary and artistic life of those forty or fifty years which were undoubtedly the most beautiful in our history.
The description of the "happy years" which preceded the Revolution brings us one of the richest and most complete testimonies there is. We see Madame Geoffrin smiling and Diderot wrapping himself in his dressing gown to gaze mockingly at two priests arguing about atheism; Mlle de Lespinasse flattered her visitors to make them talk and the venomous Baron d'Holbach fueled the "plot" against J.-J.
Rousseau... Poets, musicians, journalists, painters, "amateurs", men of letters of all kinds compose colorful paintings where the nostalgia and regrets of a whole era destroyed by the Revolution are measured.
